Meal plan defination---
There are some industry standards for Meal Plans, which are noted below. Keep in mind that the definition of each plan is a general understanding, and the description of the Meal Plans can be adjusted by the hotel.
A la carte – Does not include any meals.
All-Inclusive (AI) – All -inclusive plans differ from resort to resort, but the basic "inclusive" plan traditionally covers all meals, beverages, most non-motorized watersports.
American Plan (AP) – Includes three meals per day at the hotel, i.e. breakfast, lunch and dinner. Travelers choosing a hotel in a remote location where there are not many restaurants — or none at all — need to stay at a hotel that offers an American plan. Meals plans typically do not include wine or cocktails.
Bed & Breakfast (BB) – Breakfast is included in the rate.
Continental Plan (CP) – The quoted rate includes a continental breakfast.
A continental breakfast normally consists of coffee or tea, juice, and bread. The bread may be as simple as a loaf or as appealing as a basket of freshly baked croissants, scones, and muffins. At some facilities, yogurt and fresh fruit may also be available. The Continental Plan breakfast does not include cooked foods, such as pancakes or eggs.
Under the continental plan, diners often find breakfast is self-serve, although many hotels have a waiter available to pour and refill beverages.
Although there is no fee for breakfast when you stay in a hotel on the continental plan, it's considerate to leave a small tip if you've been served by a waiter. Aside from breakfast, all other food provided by the hotel is billed.
European Plan (EP) – Does not include any meals. The advantage of the European Plan is that guests have more options to try a variety of restaurant experiences, and can often save money by eating out at restaurants that charge less than the hotel dining room.
Family American Plan (FA) – This plan offers free or discounted meals for children.
Family Plan (FP) – This Plan offers discounted meals for children.
Half Board (or Half Pension) – Includes two meals per day at the hotel. Breakfast and either lunch or dinner. Typically used in European countries.
Modified American Plan (MAP) – The quoted rate includes two meals a day, including breakfast and either lunch or dinner. In the Modified American plan, these meals are provided by the hotel dining room. Travelers choosing a hotel in a remote location where there are not many restaurants — or none at all — need to stay at a hotel that offers at least a Modified American plan. Meals plans typically do not include wine or cocktails.
